Exercise 1

Week 4 Audio Editing Exercises

The mixing of sound elements below creates an audio setting that supports the action and engages the spectators.
  • Speech/ Dialogue
  • Sound effects
  • However, music is not required for this exercise.
  • Place audio files on the timeline, and sync them with video.
  • Audio track:
    • 3 tracks for dialogue, one character one track.
    • 4 tracks for sound effects,
    • 3 tracks for ambiance sound.
  • Edit voice from female to male, male to female, human to cute animal/adult to kid: Premiere Pro → Audio Effects → Pitch Shifter → Semi tones.
  • Volume: Dialogue: between -6dB & -12dB, Ambience: below -20dB, Hard sound effects: Depend.)

Video Breakdown

For the video breakdown list last week, our group of six broke down the video clip into scenes, detailed scenes, characters, dialogue, sound effects, and ambiance. Then during the production of the audio dubbing, I fill out the missing link of sound effects from the free sound website.

Dialogue

Originally I already did the recording of dialogue before but I was sick then, so I redoed all of the dialogue when I was slightly better. Then adjusted it to the right volume.

Mr Martin told us(girls) to change the shift the pitch of our recorded voices to have a male voice. I shifted it to -1 for Waymond and 3 for Evelyn as I was still sick during this time and my voice was very hoarse and low.

Looking back maybe I should have not put 3 for Evelyn and gone lower as I'm hearing it again it's way too high.

Sound effects and Ambiance

I compiled all of the sound effects and ambiance into the timeline and adjusted the volume separately to make sure they didn't go above the intended decibels, also making sure they were at the right speed.

I also added audio fading from the presets of audio transition effects, especially on the part where Deidre punches and opens the door some of the office ambiance is going to go through.

4. Reflection

1. Experience

Working on the audio for this project was both challenging and enlightening. Our team began by breaking down the video into its essential components—scenes, characters, dialogue, sound effects, and ambiance. I was responsible for filling in the missing sound effects from a free sound website, which was a fun part of the process. Re-recording the dialogue was necessary since I was sick the first time. Adjusting the pitch to create a male voice was tricky, especially as my voice was hoarse, and I had to experiment with different settings.

2. Observation

One thing I noticed was how the pitch shifting affected the overall sound quality. While the pitch change for Waymond worked fairly well, the one for Evelyn was too high, which made it sound unnatural. Balancing the volume across different audio tracks—dialogue, sound effects, and ambiance—was crucial to avoid overpowering the scenes. Adding audio fading was another key aspect that helped smooth transitions, particularly in action sequences like the door punch.

3. Findings

I learned that attention to detail is essential when working with audio. The wrong pitch or volume can easily disrupt the immersion of a scene. I also found that audio fading is a simple yet effective tool to make transitions feel seamless. Overall, this experience taught me the importance of patience and precision in audio editing, as even small adjustments can make a big difference in the final product.
