3. FINAL PROJECT: INFOGRAPHIC VIDEO ANIMATION

INSTRUCTION:
Based on FLIP group topic research, produce a basic video animation.

DESCRIPTION:
Using a processed design framework, you will now produce an infographic report to present the given information to a ‘target audience’ with the purpose of:

1. Creating awareness (such as Global Warming, Recycle, etc.)
2. Explaining a process (such as "how to" video)
3. Defining a concept (such as "What is Fast Fashion", "What is Color Wheel", etc.)

Any time based media and software using photography, vector imagery.

REQUIREMENT:
Video resolution: 1920px x 1080px HD (min 1.5 mins max 3 mins)

SUBMISSION:
1. A ± 3 minute animated infographic uploaded into YouTube (unlisted)
2. Digital compilation into your Google Drive Folder
3. Online posts in your E-portfolio as your reflective studies(Please attach the E-Portfolio link here for submission.)

1. Topic

For the topic, my group made a couple of topic suggestions on what we wanted to make, and after a while, we decided on mooncakes as the topic. Then our leader created a PPT to showcase during class.

After that, we split up the work between the members. This is the list of work we had to do:

Script: Tristan, Zhang Hanyuan
Voice-over: Yong Zhen Xing
Storyboard: Sheryne, Wu Ziyang
Animation:

  • Yang Jiayi: Scene 17-21 (with ShaoHan), Scene 22, 24

  • Shao Han: Scene 8-11, Scene 17-21 (with Jiayi)

  • Velicia: Scene 1, 3, 4

  • Sheryne: Scene 2, 5, 6, 7

  • Valerie: Scene 12-16, 25-26

Editor/sound effects: Wang Yifan, Valerie

2. Progress (My Part)

Since my part was the animation assets, I worked on making the illustrations for the animation. The animation team needed to wait a while for the storyboard and voice-over to be finished first, as Sir suggested.

At first, I thought we were going to make the animation in Canva like the other groups, but it turned out I only needed to make the illustrations, and another person would animate them in AE.

Fig 3.2 Canva Progress, Week 6 (11/03/2025)

I had already started making the video animation on Canva, but I didn’t realize I only needed to make the illustrations. This happened because of language barriers, I think, because initially, the people working on the animation part were only three people—me and two other Chinese students. (The other two students helped because we needed extra hands, or we wouldn’t have been able to finish this on time.)

I wasn’t exactly prepared for this. I thought we were going to use Canva assets so we wouldn’t have to worry about making the animation assets ourselves, but I guess the animation team wanted to make the assets themselves. So I asked for the references, and after receiving them, I started working on my illustrations. I was also reminded that I needed to separate the assets into layers so the editor could animate them.

Initially, I had six storyboards to do, from the introduction to the history part, but I realized that working on the human characters was taking too long. As I said, I wasn’t prepared for drawing the assets and never really drew that much either.

So when another member later joined the animation team and offered to help with the illustrations, I asked her to do the parts with people in them while I did the other three.

I did the map first because I thought it was the easiest, but it ended up looking too bland. After getting feedback from another member in the animation team, I improved it. She suggested that I use the image below as a reference.

Then I found another one that was similar but showed where the Tang Dynasty really was.

I also experimented with the title banner on top, but after a while, I figured it already looked good without any modifications.

And this is the final result of that storyboard.

For the mooncake types, I looked at this poster for reference on the different types of mooncakes. They were easy enough to draw with the help of the gradient tool to add colors and the brush stroke tool to add texture to them.

For the Cantonese mooncake, I also used the image below as a reference for the pattern on it.

This is the final result after feedback to add a background.

For the last scene, I actually just found multiple styles of clouds, moons, stars, and lanterns online and removed the backgrounds on them. Then I adjusted them according to the sketch on the storyboard.

After all that, I just needed to export each layer and put it in Google Drive so the editor could take them out.

3. Final Submission

Fig 3.21 Youtube Video, Week 6 (11/03/2025)

There were a couple of things that didn’t sit right with me, but got not time to fix it because its near deadline about the final product:

  • The color palette looked so gloomy. This was supposed to be a celebration, but the color palette had already been decided before I realized we were just making the assets. The color palette should have been colorful and vibrant.

  • The animation itself looked choppy, and images overlapped with each other before they could fade away.

  • The fonts used had different sizes throughout the video, especially in the recipe part.

  • No official title or ending, and the credits scrolled too fast.

Some things I learned from this project:

  • The storyboard should have been animated so the editor could animate it smoothly.

  • The person who made the storyboard and the editor who made the video should have been the same person so they would know what they needed from the asset illustration maker.

  • We should have made a WhatsApp group for the animation team along with the editor to discuss who was doing what, what references to use, the progress, and feedback. This way, the editor could also tell us what they needed for the video more clearly. In the beginning, the three of us just contacted each other individually, and that caused some miscommunication.

  • We should have decided on a clear color palette and design references early on and made sure they suited the topic of the video.

4. Feedback

Week 4:

Specific Feedback:

  • Make the information simpler.
  • The animation doesn’t have to be fully illustrated per frame (I think he meant that we can use motion graphic animation so its easier)
  • Make a script (using voiceover for the video) to be able to visualize the video.

Week 4:

Specific Feedback:

  • Piechart: the other objects can be smaller while the piechart can be made bigger.
  • Think and reevaluate about certain scenes bcs it may too long (with voiceover included).
  • Final editing: animate part by part. render so that we will have mov and mp4 (AE).
  • Move on to premiere pro: then can just slot in the renders based on timing.

5. Reflection

1. Experience

The experience was not what I expected at first. I thought we’d animate in Canva, but it turned out I only needed to make the illustrations, and someone else would handle the animation. There was some miscommunication, and I wasn’t really prepared to draw assets myself, but I adjusted along the way. In the end, I managed to complete my part and hand it over properly.

2. Observation

From what I observed, things could have been more organized. There was a lot of back-and-forth that could have been avoided if we had clearer coordination. Communication was a bit messy at the start, and we only started working properly together later on.

3. Findings

The main takeaway is that better planning would have made everything smoother. The animation had some issues that could have been fixed if we had a clearer structure from the beginning. A proper discussion early on would have helped avoid confusion and made things more efficient.
