Rationale

The story of Si Manis Jembatan Ancol seems familiar to the people of English. Since being made into the title of films and soap operas, His story has become more famous. Not only as a horror story on the screen but also as an urban legend of the capital.

Fig 3.1.1 Ancol Bridge, Week 7(Nov. 6, 2023).

Si Manis Jembatan Ancol is synonymous with the figure of a woman who died tragically in a place that is now part of a famous tourist attraction in Jakarta. It's been a long time, but the scary impression is still felt. Although what is seen on the screen is a fictional story, it turns out that Si Manis Jembatan Ancol has origins related to history. There are several versions of the origin of the story, but They all have in common: the tragic part of death.

Fig 3.1.2 Poster of the movie, Week 7(Nov. 6, 2023).

The most famous version is the story related to the history of Jakarta in the past when it was still called Batavia. Strengthened by the evidence of living witnesses in the research of historian Ridwan Saidi, his story is quite interesting to explore. It was the beginning of the 19th century, and Batavia was still under Dutch colonial rule. There is a 16-year-old village flower in north Jakarta named Siti Ariah. Together with her mother and brother, Siti Ariah lives in a Wealthy Merchant's House. It turned out that the rich merchant intended to edit Siti Ariah but as a mistress. Siti Ariah chose to run away because she was not willing to be a mistress.

During her escape, Siti Ariah met Oei TAdd Sia, a Batavian man who was famous for being rich and fond of playing women. Oei also had a great influence in Batavia, especially in Ancol. Siti Ariah thought she would be saved, but it turned out that Oei was worse. After being invited to a brothel in the Ancol area, Siti Ariah also became the target of Oey as a concubine. Siti Ariah also fled for the second time. Oei orders people to find Siti Ariah. When found, Siti Ariah fought hard. But instead, he was tortured by Oei's men to death around Lake Sunter. Her body was wrapped in sacks and dumped in an area close to the Ancol bridge.

After the fateful event, many people talked about mystical events. It's as if Siti Ariah's spirit is curious and wants revenge on the people who killed her. Not a few residents claim to have had a mysterious experience with the Sweetie. The location of the unnatural death event is then believed to be a haunted place. It is said that until now residents still believe in the existence of supernatural beings there. Not only did she appear for an instant, but Sweet also transformed into someone in red who needed help.

In general, the target is a person who is driving a vehicle. Sweet asked to be dropped off at night but suddenly disappeared before reaching her destination. It turned out that the driver was found in an accident in the morning. Not only the driver who happened to pass by but there were also motorcycle taxi drivers who claimed to experience similar disturbances.

Rationale

Hello! My name is Velicia from Indonesia. I'm 18 this year, and soon will be 19. I'm taking the design course Bachelor in Creative Media. I have 1 younger sister whom I have a love-hate relationship with.

I want to make stuff with my own hands, whether it be digital art, making games, pottery, miniature, crochet, painting, or stories, it needs to be done with my hands. I also like long walks (without carrying anything, without burden), I also like birds, BIRDS, they're free up there a whole sky to play around. Flowers and stars too, how they have their own language to Leave secret messages and a universe compass as a guide to help people move around.

My motivation comes from stories and other people. I love reading stories, They gave me so much whiplash. I cheer for the characters, I cry for them, I Love, hate, hope, weep, forgive, mad, and way more. They gave me hope, hope for other possibilities, where imagination runs wild, where love and kindness despite all odds prevail, and not this world's wars, lies, and unnecessary cruelness. And I have met people that prove that hope still exist and I want to be that hope to other people.

I want to visualize my passion in an artwork with a book to symbolize stories, with flowers, birds, stars, and many handmade stuff a lot of possibilities. Pretty straightforward.

REFLECTION
Experience

Coming to this class I didn't think it would be challenging at first. But turns out there's a lot I need to know because art isn't just shapes and colors, they have fundamentals, theory, composition, and more. I'm glad to have this class and my talented friends who inspire me and an even more talented Lecturer to learn from.

On the vormator shapes, I got to learn to think about the different ways shapes go together. The decisive task and digital triptych were challenging as I needed to visualize a narrative, it taught me to see the perspective of the viewer instead of the creator and also to pay attention to the composition and the visual storytelling so the reader can understand and be intrigued.

The last task is unique as in we got more freedom in what was going to make. Creating an artwork representing myself and my passion for art. Demanding an understanding of myself and the necessary skills to satisfy the urge to make it the best it can be.

Observations

I realized that it took a lot of thought and planning to make this artwork. Every element plays a role in the composition and as the creator, I need to make sure all of them work together to convey the intended message. I also need to pay attention to the visual storytelling of it and see the artwork from the viewer's perspective.

Findings

Each of these tasks gave me lessons to learn, from the importance of composition, and visual storytelling, to a better understanding of illustration in general. Overall this class has improved my creative skills and understanding of the world of illustration. Also, I still need to learn how to manage my time.
