LECTURE

Week 2 - Online Class (Oct 5, 2023)

INTRODUCTION TO BASIC COMPOSITION

1. Focal Point

A strong focal point, as it helps your viewers' eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first.

2. Scale and Hierachy

Help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements.

Fig 2.1 Scale and Hierachy, Week 2 (Oct 5, 2023).

3. Balance the Elements

Each element has a 'weight' to it. Smaller objects might 'weigh' less than larger objects, and heavily textured elements might 'weigh' more than flatly colored elements.

Fig 3.1 Balance the Elements, Week 2 (Oct 5, 2023).

4. White Space

White space when used strategically can help boost your design's Clarity by balancing out the busy parts of your composition with space that helps your design to breathe.

Fig 4.1 White Space, Week 2 (Oct 5, 2023).

5. Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds is the process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines.

The Rule of Thirds is a way to:

  • Made the composition pleasing to the eye.
  • Creatively use negative space.
  • Create a conversation between the subject and background.

6. Golden Ratio

It is commonly found in nature, and when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Fig 6.1 Golden Ratio, Week 2(Oct 5, 2023).

The Golden Ratio is a useful guideline for determining the dimensions of the layout. One very simple way to apply the Golden Ratio is to Set your dimensions to 1:1.618

REFERENCE:

TUTORIAL & PRACTICAL

Physical Collage Design (10%).

The aim is to develop a theme/idea with layers of images with design principles, as well as familiar with the fundamentals of composition.

You are required to capture screenshots to demonstrate a step-by-step progression as to how the visuals are produced (at least 10 steps) and compile it in a PORTFOLIO PDF. This should be modeled after a Photoshop/Illustrator tutorial (examples to be provided).

We are required to make 3 collage sketches from any media such as magazines or newspapers.

Fig 2.1 Composition #1, Week 3 (Oct 12, 2023).

Concept: A perspective on life on the bad and the good. The loss of a loved one who feels a home, how you remember their favorite flowers and candle scent. But life still goes on anyway and you're grateful for the memories you make with them. Even if one day you're old and forget their face, the smell of their favorite flower reminds you of home.

Fig 2.2 Composition #2, Week 3 (Oct 12, 2023).

Concept: The journey of getting to know yourselves, where you are free and lonely. seeing the many colors of the world and using them to paint your soul. Weird, jagged, ripped, and mismatched, but somehow it's beautiful. Because that is what we are, a collage of everyone we ever met and Everything we ever experience

Fig 2.3 Composition #3, Week 3 (Oct 12, 2023).

Concept: Life seemed like a long line of heartbeats, it goes up and down, people come and leave, flowers bloom and whiter, there's rain and then a rainbow. And life is beautiful because of it, we cherish the memories of people we no longer see, we smile at the flowers on the side of the road even if they are no longer there tomorrow, and we are okay with rain because we know there's a rainbow at the end of it. Whatever happens, we continue living.

REFLECTION
1 Experience

For the first week, we got to search for old magazines or any book that's no longer used to be cut up for college. Sadly I don't have any book like that, so me and my friend went to a mall to buy a cheap magazine with a lot of pictures we can cut up for the collage. It was my first time going to that mall and my friend already went there before so we didn't waste much time finding the magazines

2 Observations

Besides the fact that it's the first time I'm going to that mall, the stationary is quite complete. Somehow some of the thinner magazines cost way more than the thicker ones, not all of them of course but it still baffles me.

3 Findings

Check carefully for the price of each magazine, the magazines with popular people are more expensive even though it's thinner than a thick collection of works of photography.
