LECTURE

Week 5 - F2F Class (Oct 26, 2023)

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP

1. Adjustment Layer

The Adjustment Layers in Photoshop are non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels. You can edit and discard your adjustments or restore your original image at any time.

How to use Adjustment Layers in Photoshop

When you add an adjustment layer to your image, a new layer will appear over your image, and a panel specific to the type of adjustment You've selected will pop up.

1. Brightness / Contrast

The brightness slider is for adjusting the highlights in your image and the Contrast slider is for adjusting the shadows in your image.

2. Level

Levels modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, mid-tones, and highlights. (most used tools)

3. Curves

Curves let you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image.

4. Exposure

Exposure will adjust only the highlights of the image, Offset adjusts the mid tones and Gamma will adjust the dark tones only.

5. Selective Colors

Selectively modify the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors in your image.

2. Filters

There are filters to change color, add blur, or create completely new image effects.

TUTORIAL & PRACTICAL

We got a task to attach our best composition from week 4 digital collage, then improvise our week 4 digital collage into week 5 by using Adjustment Layers & Filters on Photoshop and explain what we've learned in the description section.

Fig 4.1 Best Composition, Week 5 (Oct 26, 2023).

Description: The design color palette does not match, even though the patches texture helps and everything is a bit grey and dull. The whites are shining too much, distracting the eye from the other subject. There's also not as much contrast as I hoped in the design.

Fig 4.2 Process, Week 5 (Oct 26, 2023).

Fig 4.3 Process, Week 5 (Oct 26, 2023).

Fig 4.3 With Layers and Filters, Week 5 (Oct 26, 2023).

Description: I've learned about adjustment layers and tried to implement them in the approved design. First I use the adjustment layer Hue/Saturation to add brighter color to the design, and then add the Level adjustment, and use the existing presets (Increase contrast 2) to make each of the color more vibrant, therefore producing added contrast to the overall picture. The last adjustment is color balance, for the highlight tone I added more red, and for the tone of the shadow I added more cyan, to make the design have slight tones of red all over thus giving it a warmer look.

FEEDBACK

Mr. Fauzi said that the artwork with adjustments and filter looked better, it looked brighter and more saturated.

REFLECTION
1 Experience

The tutorials given are easy enough to understand and it's cool that Photoshop can change the vibe of a whole artwork. Make them brighter or darker, or give them warmer or colder tones. it's exciting to know that we can do with so many options of filters and adjustment.

2 Observations

With a lot of options come with a lot more time experimenting with it, but the time is worth it to know what each adjustment does, and how they stack on top of each other. they all made small changes to the artwork and I need to add a lot of adjustments to the collage to the point that's good enough for me.

3 Findings

After tweaking with a bunch of adjustments, the easiest way to elevate the artwork is to use the curves adjustment and make the lighter and darker parts more contrasting. Then add saturation adjustment to make the color pop more.
